You don’t necessarily have to replace a chipped windscreen. At Quality Fit Windscreens, we can potentially repair it using a special resin that’s clear and strong. This helps to hold the damaged glass together, so it doesn’t get any worse.
First we will make sure that the affected area of the windscreen is clean. Then we use a vacuum to remove any air that’s held within the chip. Finally, we inject a liquid resin into the chip and cure it with a UV light. This procedure takes no more than 30 minutes and can be done mobile.
So what do you do when you have a chipped windscreen?
This is one of the most important points. When your windscreen is chipped, the glass is damaged and as a result, weakened. How weak depends on a number of factors, mainly how many layers which have been affected.
The more damaged your windscreen has, the easier it is for a chip to turn into a small crack, which can then easily grow longer and deeper. Once a chip turns into a crack, the chances of repair get slimmer. Because your windscreen is weaker, it doesn’t take much for your windscreen to get worse. In fact, a small bump on the road is all it can take for that small crack to turn into a large crack across your windscreen.
With that in mind, once a crack gets worse, so does your visibility. That’s why we recommend that you don’t drive if possible – it will cost less, be quicker to repair and is safer overall.
Check if repair is possible
You know now that chips can be repaired, but that depends on the size of the chip and its location. In some cases, we will recommend replacing the windscreen.
Your safety is very important to us. For example, if you have a chip in your windscreen that is perpendicular to the driver’s immediate eye-line, we can only repair it if the chip is less than 10mm wide. A chip can be a little bigger on the passenger’s side and up to 40mm around the edges. This is a general guide as the position of your windscreen wipers also factor into the repair.
